31. 2007Red Sox Won!The Red Sox won, the Red Sox won!
Two championships in 4 years? De we have to call the Red Sox "dynasty of the 2000s"? What happened to the tragic heroes who "take your heart, break your heart and throw it away" year after year? We love them, we hate them, because they don't win. Now what?!?! Before their 2004 win, there was a 86-year drought. It was no ordinary drought, but a devastating, heart-breaking one. Generations of devoted Red Sox fans have lived and died without seeing the Red Sox win a championship. There were late nights when fathers woke up their sons, bringing them to the TV, telling them they would be seeing something only their grandfather had seen. The very next thing was the Red Sox losing in an incomprehensible fashion, leaving the kids scarred for life and a devoted Red Sox fan for life, like their fathers, grandfathers and great greatfathers. The Red Sox did come close time after time, and just when they seemed to have the game wrapped up, freakish things would always happen and Red Sox would always end up losing. Losing and heartbreaking became the badges of the Red Sox fans. Many began to believe that the Red Sox was cursed and some have performed various rituals in order to lift the curse, but to no avail. Every year, as the Red Sox was out of the playoffs, their fans would be wandering the streets of Boston, in the middle of the night, in the dead of the winter, like ghosts from the past and present, numbed by the pain and the cold, telling themselves there would always be next year and the year after next. Year after year, 86 years passed, fathers and grandfathers gone, sons and grandsons joined in. In the mean time, their bitter rival, the Yankees, had won tons of World Series championships, often at the expenses of the Red Sox.
Then there they were again in 2004 ALCS. Yankees lead 3-0 in the series and lead at the end of Game 4, all seem to be lost. Then as if the curse was suddenly lifted and miracle started to happen. Against all odds, they came back to tie, then won the game. Game 5, miracle repeated itself. Game 6, Kurt Schilling, with a broken foot, pitched his heart out. As blood from his left foot seeped out of his socks (Red Sox, how symbolic!), Red Sox fans, and everyone else around the country started to believe it was the year of the Red Sox and there was nothing to stop them anymore. They won game 6 and 7 (biggest comeback in the history of baseball), then swept the Cardinals in the World Series. That night, when they had finally done it after 86 years, was a sleepless night for Red Sox fans. They were wandering the streets of Boston again, only this time, ghosts were gone, celebration had started. But for many, they wouldn't know how to celebrate, they just walked and walked, telling themselves it was not a dream. For the days to follow, they would go to the graves of their last parents and grandparents, telling them their Red Sox had finally won and they can forever rest in peace.
What a great sports story, I remember I had tears in my eyes, even not as a Red Sox fan. I didn't believe until then that sports could have such effects on people's lives. So after all that, their second championship in 4 years seems to be over-doing it
Okay, on a lighter note, the moral of the story is: never bet against the Red Sox and never bet against Red Sox fans.
3. 2007Class Album2006 Reunion Album
On one late January day in 2007, the most precious package in the world, an inconspicuous brownish over-sized padded envelop from Canada, embarked on the last leg of its journey on a mail-delivery truck, driven by our mailman, Reggie. For those who don’t know Reggie (of course, none of you do), he is a friendly and talkative fellow, always complaining and mostly about-you won’t have guessed it-the US Postal Service. I often obligingly agree with his complaints, partly out of my own experience, but mostly out of politeness. Little did Reggie know when he started his delivery route that day he was about to make me very happy and change my attitude towards the Postal Service forever. How would he understand even if I explain to him and how would I explain to him when I was speechless, holding the package in my hand? I thanked him profusely, and apologetically yet abruptly left him and his complaining.
You all should have known by now that it was the “Reunion Photo Album” I just received. If Reggie just did his job delivering the Album, then Wang Hao had done a great deed preserving the memories of the reunion and getting a copy to us unfortunate ones. Need I say again that the “Magnificent Four” had performed nothing short of a miracle to make the reunion a reality? We are forever in debt to your four. OK, let’s check out the photo album.
After taking the album out of the envelope tenderly as if handling a new born baby, I spent the next few minutes lingering over the front and back covers. I tried to look for the similarities and differences, and found plenty. Some gained a little weight, some lost plenty of hair. Some hunched over a bit and some acquired a few wrinkles. The biggest contract is how you presented yourselves. Let’s face it; we were a goofy-looking bunch back then (with a few exceptions). The only things we got going for us were our youth and full-heads of hair. And now, I see confidence, wisdom, experiences, success and content radiating through each pair of eyes or half-hidden under every fold of wrinkles. You are a handsome-looking bunch, especially the girls (How they kept getting better looking is beyond me.) Twenty years ago, I was proud to call you my classmates, now I am in awe of every one of you, my dearest friends.
Opening the album, I was savoring each word in the Preface and the Class Anthem (as of today, no one has told me how to sing it. So what’s the deal?
Last, but not the least, thank you for signing the album for me. Some of your signatures were so unique and illegible that I could not tell whose they were. For instance, who wrote “I Love U”? I love you too! I love you all! (If there is a better way to finish than this, I don’t know it).

18. 2006Salute to all the fathers!
My dear fellow 111861ers, how are you all? I haven't written to you for a while now, got a little busier, a lot lazier or otherwise occupied. Okay okay, I have just reasons, no excuses
This Sunday is Father's Day. Since we have so many fathers in our class, it will be extremely unfair not sending out Father's Day greetings, after what we have done for Mother's Day. A shout-out to all the fathers, "Happy Father's Day!!". And to our own fathers, we say "I love you, dad", for that's so rarely said to them. What can we say about fathers, while so much has been said about mothers and maternal love. I always find the love of a father is quite different from that of a mother. As a child, we could feel a mother's love, in any given day, at any given time. As we seek mother's love, whenever we need it, we always seek approval from our fathers. As we grew older, we started to appreciate more and more the love of a father. I'd like to hear from them how your lives changed when becoming a father. What kind of father you thrive to be? A strict one, yet with tender love? An authority figure, as well as a budding friend? Do you see your own image in your child, and/or do you see the world differently through their eyes. I don't think enough has been said or written about fathers, so I invite every father here, to write about their fatherhood, to share with each other our feelings and parenting philosophies, and to pass these onto our next generation. It will be fascinating. There is a good book that is next on my to-read list, which also makes a nice Father's Day gift. It's called "The Wisdom of Our Fathers", a collection of letters by people recounting relationships between fathers and their sons and daughters. I have a better idea though for Father's Day. Let's ask the kids to write about their fathers, tell them it's for a "World's Greatest Dad" competition. When all the entries are submitted, we can vote for our "Best Dad of 111861". The winner will be announced after a deadline and he will get the bragging rights, as well as a prize of...(a "World's Greatest Dad" T-shirt? Well, we can figure out the prize later). Sorry gals, for not doing anything like that for Mother's Day. We just don't have the heart to entice you four to compete with each others. But for the guys, we say: "BRING IT ON!" I can't conclude this email without saying something about the World Cup in its full swing. I have only watched 2-3 games in their entity by now. Since our local time for each game is 6am, 9am and 11am, during the weekdays I have to record them and watch them each night. With prior knowledge of final scores, as well as exact time for each goal, I can easily fast-forward and make my own highlight reel. I am not a morning person, so I can't even get up at 6 am on weekends to watch the game (I can stay up real late, but it's killing me to get up early. An unhealthy habit from my youth, I think). I noticed that there are quite many set-piece goals (from free kicks or corner kicks) and some cliff-hanging final-minutes scores. Just so you know, I am rooting against USA. For some reasons unknown, US team is ranked #5 in the world, and US sports media predicted them to win the group. I hope they won't make it out of the group play, those "arrogant bastards", haha. One last selfish question. I have NOT received the photo album from the reunion. What about you others in the States? Salute to all the fathers! The Passion of the Christ", 要想看完需要足够坚强的神经。 10. 2006A dream of PARADISEAloha, everyone! Sorry for being away for a few days. Did I miss anything? Or did anyone miss me? I noticed our voting system is up and working, even my whimsical idea of Hawaii is on the ballot. While I am still contemplating my final decision, I am glad to see that there is already one vote for Hawaii. Thank you, whoever you are. You are my best anonymous friend If we do go to Hawaii for the reunion, we should vacation there for about one week. First few days for the reunion party, the rest of the time, we can go island hopping, hiking, camping, fishing, mountain biking, roller skating (everyone and every family should be able to find their favorite activities). Of course, how can I not mention the beaches. I am not a beach person, per se, for various reasons. One, I can't swim. Two, I don't have a beach body to show off and three, I have passed the age of looking at pretty girls in bikini and drooling. I meant the drooling part, haha. One should always appreciate beauty when sees it. The day we stop looking is the day we start dying, agreed? According to Todd, there should be more photo, but my begging didn't work. Arggg!! I will wait, 'cause patience is a virtue. Waiting, waiting, waiting.... Till next time.. Shanming
